Volkswagen Vanagon
Service and Repair
- Setting A New Standard For Local Car Care
VanGo Auto is proud to be a water-cooled Volkswagen Vanagon specialty shop, the only classic vehicles we service. While many repair shops avoid Vanagons because of their age, complexity, or the extra time and investment they require, our team embraces the challenge. We partner with owners to understand, prioritize, and plan for the unique needs of these beloved vans, so they remain safe, reliable, and enjoyable to drive. With deep experience and genuine passion for Vanagons, we recognize both the possibilities and the limitations of keeping them on the road. We are committed to helping you get the most out of your van for years to come.
Searching for a Vanagon
If you’re considering buying a Vanagon, an inspection is critical before committing. Because good vans sell quickly, a clean inspection may even warrant putting down a deposit to show the seller you’re serious. If the van isn’t near VanGo, seek out another Vanagon specialty shop or, if none are available, a Volkswagen shop familiar with these classics.
With Vanagons now 40-years old, age and mileage naturally take their toll on the components that keep you safe and comfortable on the road. Whether you’re purchasing your first van or reviving one from storage, a thorough inspection helps you avoid surprises. Not every shop understands the quirks of these vehicles, and the last thing you want is to be stranded without proper support. An inspection gives you peace of mind and helps ensure your future Vanagon is truly what you are looking for.
When starting your search, here are some key questions to ask when buying a Vanagon:
Price
If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Paying more for a van with major updates already completed can save you money (and headaches) later. Also consider the body and interior condition – rust and worn interiors can be far more expensive to resolve than a tired engine. At VanGo, we’d rather see you buy a clean, rust-free van with a bad motor than a rusty van with a brand-new Subaru conversion. Engines can be replaced; chasing rust never ends.
History
Ask about accidents, flood damage, gaps in ownership, and whether there are records showing consistent maintenance. Confirm that the odometer works, a broken one can hide a lot of mileage.
Mechanical & Upgrades
Check mileage, engine or transmission rebuilds, and whether the cooling system, suspension, and fuel lines have been updated. Camper feature enhancements are a plus, but make sure any upgrades were done correctly, quality of work is just as important as the upgrade itself.
Interior & Condition
Look for signs of water leaks, rodent odor, or chewed wiring. Test all camper features: refrigerator, heater, propane system, faucet, and more.
Rust
Inspect wheel seams, rocker panels, and the undercarriage. Rust patches may look fine for sale photos but can quickly return if the corrosion runs deep. Ask for detailed photos and measurements.
Pop Top
Examine fiberglass, luggage rack, and seals. Pop tops are generally more desirable and hold stronger resale value than tin tops.
Vanagon Inspection Services
Whether you’re getting to know a Vanagon you already own or need a pre- or post-purchase inspection before investing, VanGo is here to help. The last thing we want is for your exciting Vanagon purchase to turn into a costly burden. Our goal is to give you confidence that your VW van will be a safe and enjoyable investment for years to come.
Inspections are billed at $184/hour — typically 2.5 hours for a Weekender and 3 hours for a Camper. Each inspection includes a thorough consultation and detailed evaluation of the van’s condition. It’s a wise investment that provides peace of mind and helps protect both your pocketbook and your adventures ahead.
